The Beauty of Nude Makeup

Why nude makeup? We often hear from makeup artists or those video tutorials online that it is best to wear nude makeup for a more natural look. But what does that really mean? And when should you wear nude makeup? In this article, we will look at the wonderful effects nude makeup or nude pallette has in different occasions and how best to apply it. If by any chance, you are going to be performing for a big audience and would like to do a make-up for that, you can check our other guide on The Basics of Stage Makeup. What is a nude pallette You may be wondering what nude really means in this sense. As the word suggests, it is going for a bare look, as natural as possible. Is this the same as earth tones? Not exactly but the shades and concept are pretty similar, and you can consider earth colors part of a nude pallette. This mainly involves browns and creams, pinkish blushes that are not so bright, lip shades that are not shocking nor bright… Basically, very relaxed colors and laid back. These are often cool, like light blue and pastels. Would nude makeup make me look pale? If you’re worried about looking lifeless or pale wearing nude makeup, try it on a sunny day and see for yourself, in front of the mirror. On the contrary, nude makeup actually makes you look very fresh. It’s the type of look that makes it seem like you just got out of bed but you woke up with everything going great in your life. Your eyes are bright and perky and the color of your skin is glowing. It’s just that, people can’t easily tell if you are wearing makeup or if it’s a natural glow. That…

The Basics of Stage Makeup

Who needs stage makeup? The perfect brows, the right powder tone, matching lip color and blush… How different is it on stage and when doing your everyday makeup? Who needs stage makeup by the way and when do you need it? The truth is, anyone can benefit from learning how to apply stage makeup. As the name suggests, stage actors and basically, performers are the ones who need stage makeup. But if you are neither, do you think you will ever need to learn this skill? It might interest you to know that it comes in pretty handy. We all, at some point in our lives, may have been required or asked to speak in front of an audience. Whether it is a graduation speech, a eulogy (yes, not a pretty thought, but true), or a simple yet necessary business conference. The concept of stage makeup is to make the performer or whoever is on stage, VISIBLE on stage – that is despite the bright spotlights and the darkness of the theater or whichever venue you are using. Then there is the set or background to contend with. You do not want to appear like a ghost blending in the shadows. If you are likely to speak in such a venue, with an audience and dim lights, do yourself a favor and read on! You will thank yourself for it. Now, if you are a performer, a singer, a dancer or just want to do a very remarkable Halloween appearance at your neighborhood party, then it is likely that you will have a lot of fun with stage makeup. How do you apply stage makeup It is important to note that this type of makeup is not very pleasant for others to see on a regular day at the office….

The Foundation of Beautiful Makeup: How to Apply Foundation Properly to Achieve Your Desired Look

Do you really need to apply foundation? Foundation helps smoothen your skin – which helps you apply makeup more effectively on your face. It is usually the first thing you apply, that’s why it is called a foundation. Do you really need to? Who needs foundation and when do you need it? Going back to the first statement, if you’re going to do a full makeup, then yes! Definitely. You need foundation for the rest of the makeup to properly settle on your face. It also helps for easier blending, so that you can play along with colors and shades or a mix of texture – meaning: powder, cream, shimmery, matte, and a lot more. We will discuss those in a different topic. If you don’t apply foundation and use different types of textures and colors, it will be very difficult to even them out and blend them. Your face might look like a coloring book. On the other hand, if you’re just going to the local grocery and just want to appear decent and less horrid, any compact or loose powder will do. But if you want to contour your face, apply eyeshadow, and blushes that will last, then you must apply foundation. Things to Consider When Choosing a Foundation Here are some things you might want to give some thought to before buying a foundation. Skin type – this is almost always the most important factor in choosing which makeup to use. If you have only skin, it is better to stick to the powder type foundation or at least, one that transforms to powder finish. Coverage – Check how easily it sticks to your skin so that it can cover all areas. Most branded foundation would say full coverage but it is better to test some on…

Who wears short shorts?

chinos

Men really do have it harder than women when it comes to clothing options. I mean, what choice do they actually have when it comes to what they can wear? Jeans, t-shirts, shorts, suits, trousers, shirts, jackets, jumpers and blazers; that’s pretty much it! The choice of clothing for women is endless… though I suppose they do say that choice is the heart of tragedy! This does partially explain one of the reasons why it takes women so long to get ready, leaving the men to suffer the tragedy of waiting… For the first time in years we’ve actually had a decent Summer, it’s been so nice to be able to sit out the back in the sun with my laptop, although today appears to have returned to the rainy status quo. But just in case the sun decides to come back, or if you have a holiday coming up, then what exactly are the options to wear if you are a guy and the temperature exceeds coat wearing weather? Men are exceptionally hard done by when it come to forms of acceptable summer attire, the choice of what is deemed “acceptable” is beyond limited. It is very well documented and widely known that Speedos are considered the devil of swimwear for a man to even contemplate! Known as budgie smugglers to women, it is blatant why they should be avoided… You do get the odd supermodel every now and again donning a pair for an underwear or swimwear advertisement or something, but take the model out of the ad and put them on a beach with a hoard of judgemental women and guaranteed, the majority will still think they are hideously unsexy.  Even the supermodels are greatly unlikely to sport a pair without the compensations of their wage; don’t…

What Is The True Cost Of Being Beautiful?

7234636110_0fe30b64c9_m

Like most girls of a certain age (i.e. the wrong side of 30!) I spend a lot on my beauty regime. I don’t know if it’s more than average, and I would imagine most girls are like me and try not think about how their beauty spend affects their bank accounts, but today (in the interests of science!) I’m going to make an attempt to tot it all up. The results are a little bit scary to say the least! Hair Appointments I get my hair cut and coloured once every 6 weeks or so. I’m lucky in that I get a good price from my stylist as I used to work with her when I managed the hair salon, so this might be a little less than others would pay. I don’t get anything fancy, just an allover colour or some highlights (although I do change colours a lot – I’m back blonde again!) and I pay around £60 on average for each hair appointment. So let’s say that works out at £45 per month. Skin Care I use dermalogica for my skin care, specifically:- Daily Microfoliant Ultracalming Cleanser Precleanse The price varies a little depending on whether there is a discount on the go (I order from lookfantastic), but I am lucky if I ever see any change from £100. I need to re-order around every 4 months, so I’ll put the monthly cost for my skincare down at £25. In fact, let’s put it down as £30 to factor in wipes, pads, cotton buds etc. Running Total: £75 per month Hair Care I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you shouldn’t scrimp on your shampoo and conditioner! I’m currently using Redken Extreme, which costs around £25 for the shampoo and conditioner. I would say a bottle…

Summer Style: Fashionable Flip Flops

flipflops_preview

I don’t want to jinx it, but it looks like Summer might finally be here! Here in Glasgow at least we’ve actually had 5 decent days in a row, which is probably some kind of record. Reports of people fleeing in terror from the unknown huge yellow ball of fire in the sky may or not be exaggerated… With the change in the weather, my mind wandered onto thoughts of beaches, cocktails and Summer wear, so I thought I would put some posts together featuring holiday clothing, starting with those summer essentials – flip flops! First some trivia… Did you know that flip flops have been around since 4,000 BC, originating in ancient Egypt? Now that’s proper retro! Check out the pair below, dating back to between 1550 and 1307BC! Not sure how great they would smell after 3,000 years, so here’s some more modern styles from around the web! Regular visitors to top5beauty will know that I am a huge Vivienne Westwood fan, so I had to start with these embellished heart flip flops, which were designed by the great lady herself in collaboration with footwear designer Melissa. Bonus points for the range being eco friendly! £75.00 at ASOS. These Guava Leather Flip Flops are available from ASOS for £12.99. With a metallic silver finish, they are dressy enough for heading straight to the cocktail bar! These pink leather T-Bar Sandals are super feminine and another style which could be worn for heading out in the evening. Also available in silver. Boden £47.20 Also from Boden, these strappy sandals with yellow bows are mega cute, although perhaps a tad pricey at £49.00 Another dressy pair, these black flip flops were designed by Ted Baker and are available for £35 from ASOS. For a more classic design, Havaianas are very…

Things Are Getting Hairy! Hair Removal in 2013

hair_preview

It may not be a pleasant thing to talk about, and often it’s not a pleasant experience to go through, but it’s one of those essential things that we all have to do as part of our beauty regime. Yep, I’m talking about hair removal. These days there’s loads of ways to get rid of those unwanted follicles, with varying levels of expense and pain. Here’s a few of the ways in which us women are getting silky smooth in 2013.   IPL IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light and is a process which uses a laser to remove hair. Believe it or not, I’m actually a fully qualified IPL specialist as I took the training when I was managing the hair and beauty salon! Benefits: IPL is a very effective hair removal process, which actually blasts the hair follicle and inhibits regrowth. With a course of treatments (minimum 6) hair will be gone and should stay gone for some time. Drawbacks: A course of 6 treatments can set you back as much as £600, although if you look around on the daily deal sites (groupon, living social etc) you will normally find a deal going for a course of 6 for around £99. Be careful you are booking into a salon of a decent size though, otherwise you may struggle to get an appointment. Does It Hurt? It feels like someone flicking you with their finger, so not really… unless you have a very low pain threshold! Can I do it at home? There are a number of good quality IPL machines available for home use, such as the Phillips Lumea Precision (pictured above), available on amazon for £349.99.   Waxing Benefits: Waxing is a great way to get silky smooth, relatively cheap (about 20-30 minutes for a bikini wax)…

Domestic Goddess: Why John Lewis Is The Third Man In My Life

johnlewis_preview

It’s often been said to me that there are 3 men in my life; my son, my boyfriend and John Lewis. It’s probably a fair comment, there’s not a week goes by when I’m not browsing around the huge department store of wonders in Glasgow’s Buchanan galleries – either gazing longingly at things I can’t afford, or putting them on my John Lewis credit card (yes I even have a John Lewis credit card). Here’s the items from their Home and Garden department that are topping my wish list right now… Sometimes when I’m writing, it’s easy to be distracted by TVs, Radios… fridges(!). I don’t have the luxury of a study (or home office) and it would be great to have somewhere where I could lock myself away for a couple of hours and have total peace and quiet to concentrate. With this in mind I can’t help but drool over this Deluxe Summer House Sphere – basically a big free standing conservatory thingy. It might look like something from Doctor Who on the outside, but on the inside it’s total luxury and looks like the ideal environment for writing. Only 2 problems… 1) I don’t have a spare £17,000 2) I don’t have a garden But a girl can dream! My 30th birthday is fast approaching (26 days and counting) and I’ve been dropping hints to my dad for the past 6 months about a Mulberry bag. In reality though, being a practical man, I’ll be looking at a new sofa – those are the hints he’s been dropping to me. Not that I’ll be complaining if it’s anything like this corner unit. I often fall asleep on the couch and this would be ideal for stretching my legs out, closing my eyes and drifting off for an…

Designer Fashion: My Avenue 32 Wishlist

a32_preview

Regular readers will be well aware that I’m an online fashion shopaholic. I must say though that I’ve fallen into the lazy habit of browsing the same 4/5 websites (you can probably guess what they are!), so it’s always nice to take a look at a fresh site and some new ranges and when I was invited to create a wishlist for Avenue 32 I jumped at the chance! Before I get onto the clothes (of which there is a fabulous selection!), let me tell you a couple of the things I really liked about the site. One of my pet hates is paging through sites when browsing, constantly hitting next, so I generally look for the ‘view all’ button. What I liked about Avenue 32 is that when you are browsing, the clothes are grouped together in colours, so as you are browsing down you have all the blues together, then the greens etc. Simple, but a nice touch. I also liked that every product has a ‘still view’ and a ‘model view’ and the images in general look great. So… now for my wishlist! Well, first up is this stunning China Blue Jacquard Dress from Temperley London. Light blues are very in season and I love the design. A snip at £1500 (well it is a wishlist! ;-) In the pictures they have the Jacquard dress matched up with a pair of black heels, but under ‘complete this look’ is this pair of Silver Marilyn heels, which would really look great with the china blue. Staying with blue and continuing the oriental theme, this Blue Printed Silk Dress from Huishan Zhang fuses Chinese craftsmanship with Western aesthetics. Looks like we’re *finally* getting some decent weather and my mind is wandering to thoughts of lying on the beach this Summer….
