Top 5 tips for perfect red lips

Red lips are a red carpet favourite at the moment and have recently been spotted on celebs including Naomi Watts, Miranda Kerr and Rita Ora. Here’s my top 5 tips to ensure your lips are picture perfect every time.

1. Hydrate your lips

To avoid having to constantly touch up your lipstick, make sure your lips are well hydrated with a good quality lip balm. Flaky lips are big a no no for perfect red lips. You can’t go wrong with Burt’s Bees (£3.70 at Look Fantastic)

2. Match your skin tone

There are many different shades of red and it is important to choose the shade which matches your skin tone.

If you have pale complexion, you should stick with cool coloured, crimson reds as you don’t want to overpour the rest of your look.

If you have darker, or tanned skin, dark brick reds and burgundys will compliment your skin tone and for medium/olive skin a bold, bright fire engine red will look stunning.

3. Tone down the rest of your makeup

When you are wearing red lipstick, make sure the rest of your makeup is kept subtle. Smokey eyes may look great on their own, but when combined with bright red lips you can end up looking more coco the clown than Rita Ora. Keeping the rest of your look subtle will also accentuate the lips, even with cooler reds.

Stay away from eyeliner as this will draw attention to your eyes and away from your lips.

4. Use a red lip liner

This is an important tip for full, even red lips, as even the most glamorous of celebs don’t have a symetrical cupid’s bow. Take your time and make sure you even out your lips as much as possible.

The lip liner will also work as a primer making your lipstick stay on for longer and will help to stop bleed.

5. Add some more red!

This one is a personal favourite of mine! While the rest of the makeup on your face should be subtle, I like to match up my red lips with red nails for an eternally chic look. If you’re really feeling bold a red dress is sure to turn heads in any room!

So that’s my top 5 tips for red lips. Actually, one last tip… be bold and go for it! Please feel free to share any of your own tips by commenting below. Thanks!
